Luke knew that some girls were more than excited for this ball, but he felt that his date would be less than enthused. She likely wouldn't want to go with him or be seen with him. In her eyes he was likely a loser, but it wasn't as if he liked her with warm regards, either. Sure, he didn't like judging people on the basis of their surname, but putting a Lupin and a Greyback in the same room together was just inviting trouble. He was trying to break through to Hampton, but something made Luke think twice about doing the same toward Denali. She seemed a bit nastier than her brother, and she didn't seem to have any interest in him. It wasn't as if he could ever say that he would seek her out. Let alone ask her to go to a ball with him, but these dates weren't dates of their own devising. He thought that was something that was going to show in most of the couples. Some people got lucky like Harry - who got to go with Cho. Cho was a nice girl. A nicer girl than Denali, but Luke would just have to make the best of what he had. It would be hard. Not impossible, but hard enough. He tried not to think of it, though. He knew that it wasn't as if Denali would have chosen him if given the option of choosing whom to go with. He would be nice, he would leave her alone if that's what she really wanted, and if she insisted upon dancing he would be careful to do so well. Unfortunately for Luke, he tended to be rather clumsy like his mother. He just hoped he wouldn't end up accidentally annoying Denali in some way. That would be more than a bit embarrassing. Especially with the whole of the Great Hall watching.
He was wearing a grey suit with black shoes, a white undershirt, and a purple tie. He wasn't exactly sure if it were the most fashionable choice, but he thought that he looked good in it. Grey went with purple, right? And black went with everything. . . He would have asked one of his sister's, but he was afraid if he did that they would become exasperated with him. After all, they had to get ready for the ball themselves. He was quite glad that he didn't have to put on make-up like most girls would. He couldn't even imagine how irritating it must have been to find colors that went with one's eyes. Then again, girls would probably be used to it. He didn't know why they put themselves through so much torture just so they would look good. He really didn't. But then again, they probably felt obligated to. He didn't know why, but girls were sometimes unfathomable. By this point in his young life, he had stopped trying to figure them out. They weren't to be figured out, he surmised. They were complicated, to put it simply.
Sighing, he ran a hand through his dark brown tresses. They usually behaved, but today his hair looked a lot like Harry's. Growling at his hair, he pulled out his brush and flattened it. Thankfully, by time he was done his hair actually looked good. He hated fighting with it and losing, but thankfully for him he didn't have to fight with his hair often. It was just something that cropped up on occasion. He wasn't exactly impressed by that, but who would be? Rolling his eyes, the young man looked in the mirror. Yes, he looked good. He doubted that Denali would be impressed, but that didn't matter. The point was that he had tried. He didn't know what Dumbledore was smoking but it had to be something strong if he thought that he and Denali were going to get along well. It wasn't that Luke wouldn't make an effort to be nice, he just doubted that Denali would be the same way. He sighed. He knew why Dumbledore had done it, of course. He probably wanted the Greyback's and Lupin's to prove that they could be civilized toward one another.
However, Luke couldn't help but have misgivings over the entire thing. He was sure that Denali was going to whisper snide things under her breath about him and try to ruin his entire night simply for her own amusement. Maybe he was misjudging her, though. Maybe she would be nice. He rather doubted it, but anything was possible. He would just have to see. It wouldn't do to fret about how the evening was going to be when it could turn out to be lovely in spite of all his misgivings. He just didn't want to get his hopes up and have them dashed. At least now he had a realistic view of what may happen. After all, he sincerely doubted that Denali was going to warm up to him and they'd live happily ever after. Rolling his eyes at that absurdity, he gave a small sigh. He tried to reassure himself that everything would be all right.
He didn't entirely know if that were true, but he would try. He couldn't imagine how the evening was going to turn out. He was certain that someone would try to spike the punch, so he was going to try to stay away from that, if at all humanly possible. However, he knew by some point he was going to get thirsty. He just hoped that when he did so - he wouldn't drink so much punch that he got tipsy. That would be more than a bit embarrassing. The equivalent of him being drunk and being around someone who hated him made the embarrassment quotient go up by a hundred percent. Denali wouldn't let him live it down, he was sure. However, he might have been demonizing her. After all, she was just a girl. It wasn't as if she were going to tear his head off for being alive, right? She wasn't necessarily anything like her father even if she were a Slytherin. Not all Slytherins were inheritently evil. Some of them were, granted, but not all of them.
So he would just have to wait and see what it was like. He wasn't sure that it was going to be good, though. He was sure that this evening was doomed to be something out of a horror novel. Something that would end in tragedy and pain, blood and tears would be shed, and he'd wake up with some unknown person in his bed. Yes, this evening could certainly be the bane of existence. However, it wouldn't do to be such a negative Norman. The Hufflepuff told himself that the night could be positive. If not for him, then for some of his peers. He tried to allow that to make him happy, but he ended up frowning. It might have been selfish of him, but he wanted a good time, too. Luke didn't think that was too much to ask. Maybe it was. Sighing again, he stole one last look in the mirror. It was show time. He walked slowly to the Great Hall, determined not to be the first one there. When he arrived he saw a few other couples in the place already. Fortunately, no one was gawking at him as he entered, though, and he noticed that Denali wasn't even there yet. Good. Maybe she just wouldn't show. That might help matters significantly.
