"Here we go," Jasper muttered to himself. It was the madness personified in form of a school ball. He didn't know why he had agreed to this madness. Dumbledore had assigned their partners. Thankfully he hadn't been assigned to go with Millicent Bullstrode or something awful like that, but still, it seemed a bit awkward to be assigned to go with someone that he didn't know. Hopefully, she would be a nice person. He hadn't heard much about Lyra so she couldn't be that bad, could she? If she were awful, he would have heard about her by now, he was sure. Word traveled fast in Hogwarts almost as if all the teachers participated in the same gossip that the students did. In fact, given the way some of the Professor's were, he wouldn't be half surprised if that were true. Shaking his head, he looked into the mirror. Well, his attire wouldn't dress him itself. So it was time to set to work in making himself presentable.
First he stripped of his current clothing, and started with his black dress socks. They were fortunately soft despite the fact that they were made of wool. Then he pulled on his slacks, his undershirt, his dress coat, and lastly his dress shoes. He laced them rather quickly, his fingers were adept at doing things before he registered what they were doing. Sometimes this was a good thing - it was a bad thing when he didn't realize he was doing something like chopping something up and looked because he sometimes managed to cut himself. Not badly, mind you, but it was annoying. He sometimes seemed to space out at the most inconvenient of times like when his mother was nagging him to do something for the hundreth time.
However, generally, Jasper had a grasp on what he was doing and what he needed to do. He was a rather witty and intelligent boy, spearing people with his tongue when he saw the need to. He was usually a nice person, though. He could get along with most anyone if they were civil enough. He tried to avoid talking to people with whom he knew he would argue - i.e. Death Eater Supporters, Death Eaters, and general berks. He didn't like dealing with people who were rude or ignorant for no reason and he didn't like having to deal with people who bullied his brother staff or otherwise. He knew that Neville couldn't help that he was horrid at Potions, but it got irritating when Snape saw the need to insult Neville on a constant basis. Jasper was good with Potions, but he disliked Snape because he was suck a bullying rude snarky twit. He didn't care if he were a Professor or not, Jasper thought he behaved like a petulant child.
Rolling his eyes as he thought of the dear Potions Professor, he tightened his red tie. As he tightened it a bit too tightly he cursed under his breath, easing the tie away from his throat, but not so much that the tie was too loose. That was better. Smiling in satisfaction, he looked in the mirror. His hair was a bit mussed up from earlier what with the exchange of clothes, so he brushed it out. He wanted to make a good first impression on his date. Besides, if he didn't have to have bedhead when he walked out, he was going to shed it. No one he knew would purposefully walk out with mussed hair. Well, no one except Harry Potter who seemed incapable of taming his hair under the best of conditions. He could safely say that he was proud that his hair chose to behave a lot better than that. If it didn't, he thought, he just might cut it all off. Stroking a hand through his slightly unruly hair, he smiled. He thought he looked rather good, if he could say so himself.
The Gryffindor slowly made his way to the Great Hall for the ball. He wasn't in any hurry. After all, it was early, and he didn't want to appear too eager. Truth be told, he didn't mind the ball one way or another. He was a good dancer if Lyra wanted to dance, but if she would rather converse, he was up to sitting and listening to her speak on whatever she wanted. He was a good conversationalist, though, he generally preferred to listen as a cover to keep from talking too much about himself. He didn't want to appear arrogant. He had heard once that while girls valued confidence, arrogance was a major turn off. So he would try not to do something that he knew turned girls off. Because, really, how smart was it to annoy one's date? Especially when one had to spend the entire night with them. Not to mention, if one wanted to be with someone other than a span of a day, wouldn't they try to get on their good side? He couldn't see how strutting around like a peacock would do anything other than annoy people, but girls seemed to swoon over Draco Malfoy all the same. Some people, he thought sadly, had absolutely no taste.
Finally, after what seemed hours, Jasper pushed open the door to the Great Hall to find that not too many people were there yet. Glancing over the crowd, he recognized everyone he saw, so he noted that Lyra must not have been there yet. Frowning, he glanced all around to make sure that he hadn't missed anyone. He just hoped that when she did arrive, she recognized him. He had no idea what she looked like or how to go about finding her. He wasn't certain whom her friends were. Frowning, the Gryffindor shrugged it off. He was sure that everything would work out just fine. Exhaling softly, he grabbed a glass of punch. Hopefully, it wasn't spiked. Then again, if it were, he wouldn't be the only one that was drunk or tipsy by the end of the night. The fourth year certainly hoped, however, the Professors were more observant than usual and kept anyone from doing such a thing. Then again, with the whole of Hogwarts students being at a ball, it might hard to keep track of everyone and there would probably be twenty diversions. Not to mention, the Professors might have dates of their own. The idea of Snape having a date made him laugh so hard, that punch nearly came squirting out of his noise. He started hacking, and thwacked himself sharply in the chest to get himself to quit. A person or two was already looking at him as if he were mental.
